Police reports indicate that around 4.30 am, Ouma and his colleague, PC Cyrus Mwangi, were on duty when a single gunshot rang out.
PC Mwangi immediately took cover and did not return fire.
“I heard one gunshot from the direction where the deceased was. I immediately took cover and didn’t respond,” Mwangi later told investigators.
When he cautiously approached Ouma’s position, he discovered his colleague sitting on a mattress within a mosquito net, bleeding from a head wound.
The bullet reportedly entered through Ouma’s left eye and exited through the upper part of his skull, indicating it was fired at close range. Investigators recovered a single 7.62x51mm bullet cartridge at the scene, now secured as evidence.
During the attack, the examination container remained untouched, and officials confirmed that the day’s exams proceeded without interruption.
Authorities have since moved Ouma’s body to Lodwar County Referral Hospital, where a postmortem examination is scheduled.
Ouma’s AK-47 rifle, serial number AP 59015111, loaded with 30 rounds, was reported missing. Police have launched an operation to recover the stolen firearm and bring the perpetrators to justice, with progress updates expected soon.
Security teams have intensified patrols in the area, and officers are pursuing leads to track down those responsible for the attack.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of officers tasked with guarding critical national assets in remote areas.
